I'm just thinking, how about if the fire box and cooking chamber were separated enough to have an adjustable blow off vent in-between?

Ideas.
I'm liking the half shell idea for something small, but I don't like not having a wind buffer when open.
Looking at a 20" x 11" grate enough for smoking bacon?

Would the flow and temp control be manageable with tanks like this?

I have a couple of used well water pressure tanks that a double wall rocket stove might be a cool project for.
