I call it UDS Squared

Post by k.a.m. »

A friend and fellow competitor asked me to build him a square cooker because the way he cooks requires two or more drums. We got together and came up with a plan of sorts and as usual I built most of it just flying off my hip with no plans lol.
I had to get a wire feed as this required a lot of sheet metal welding. I used 14 gauge for this build and the shrinkage and distortion was still quite evident even for Mig welding.
My new toy.

Next was buy steel.

I got all the pieces cut out and started placing the framing on the sheets.

Once the framing was complete I built the base.

Next was the lid. I chose to create a hipped roof for looks. Tacking went well but welding out caused the lid to cave in. I ended up bracing the lid.

2 questions...
1 I would like to get my first smoker powder coated but wasn’t sure how it held up...or cost per square foot.
2 now that you have a mig....do you still oxy and Acetylene or plasma?

This cooker cost 300.00 to powder coat. It has high heat black on it. It is good for 600°. I have not seen many fireboxes that exceed 600° in normal operating situations.
I still O/A but will most likely end up with a plasma I just have to choose my battles lol.
